Ginger & turmeric washing, drying, steaming and polishing activities are being attempted at by the design of an on-farm machine. It is targeted towards small-scale farmers of the North-east. Our design team in collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, is exploring this area. This segment has been long neglected by the mainstream agricultural industry.
Aim of the Project: Scale-appropriate agricultural machinery can bring in economies of scale into the backyards of the small farmers of the region and improve their income. It can also change sustenance agricultural practices into commercially viable agriculture. Industrial design intervention can create significant impact on the acceptance and adoption of scale appropriate technology in rural areas. Industrial design is the process applied to the design of products and systems with a user-centric approach. This is achieved through exercises in building form, usability engineering, ergonomics, marketing, and brand development into the product. Good industrial design enables better dissemination and acceptance of products among the intended target users. |
