About the workshop
The Design for Sustainability workshop is a five-day training program organized by Sustainability and Social Innovation Lab, Department of Design, IIT Guwahati from 21st-25th February 2024. The workshop will provide theoretical understanding, easy to use tools and hands-on exercises on designing products that have better environmental performance. It also offers a one-to-one interaction session with the academic mentors where-in the participants can discuss their company specific sustainability challenges and get advice.
The key focus of the workshop is to disseminate design for sustainability tools and methods, designed specifically for industry professionals engaged in design and engineering of new products and redesign of existing products. Our tools will help in identifying the sustainability challenges in existing products, setting goals for improvement, ideating sustainability-oriented design solutions, lifecycle design, and design for optimal end-of-life performance.

Who should attend?
The workshop is ideal for industry professionals engaged in design and engineering of new products and looking to make their products more sustainable. The content is tailored to meet the requirements for a wide gamut of products, ranging from electrical, electronics, medical, to industrial products.
Faculty members and research scholars engaged in teaching or researching on design and engineering of products and interested in design for sustainability are also encouraged to participate in the workshop.
All participants will receive a certificate of participation for attending the event.

- Overview of various sustainable design principles for industrial design applications.

The Mentors
Dr. Pankaj Upadhyay is an Assistant Professor at IIT Guwahati. He has been teaching at the Department of Design IIT Guwahati for nearly 10 years. He has a professional experience of nearly six years, 4 of which he spent in R&D, designing and developing new products for an Indian multinational electrical engineering company, where he was able to register more than 50 designs and apply for 4 patents. He is an alumnus of three prestigious institutions in India: NIT Silchar – where he did his B.Tech in mechanical engineering, IISc Bangalore – where he did his Masters in Product Design, and IIT Guwahati – where he completed his PhD with the thesis “Frugal Design for Marginal Contexts - Formulating a Systematic Approach and a Design Toolkit”. In academia, he has been working on research related to Frugal Design, Design for social innovation and Design for sustainable development. He co-founded the Sustainability and Social Innovation (SSi Lab) with his collaborators in 2015. Since then, he has helped his students design and prototype several products for social change, inclusivity, and sustainable development

Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, India. She obtained PhD is in Design for Sustainability in the arena of scale-appropriate agricultural equipment design from IIT Guwahati. She did her bachelor’s in Industrial Design from IIT Guwahati and master’s in Integrated Product Design from Technical University of Delft, Netherlands. In the past few years, she has worked in the arena of Design for Sustainability in India, Bangladesh and Netherlands with companies like ABB, Philips, Infosys, MIDCO, VU Medical University Amsterdam, Conpax Verpakking, Beat Belly, Botanische Tuin Delft, ACC Ltd, educational institutes like IIT Guwahati, MIT Institute of Design Pune, IDC, IIT Bombay and L'Ecole de Design (Indian Operations), Nantes-Atlantique, France and NGOs like International Development Enterprise Bangladesh.
